easy hula hoop trick for beginners + variations · TUTORIAL ·
Hi,
I have something special for you. It is an easy & super fancy trick, that can be performed by a beginner hooper, but it is also often used by professional hoop dancers & performers. The trick has a lot of variations, some of them you’ll find in the video, but also stay openminded & try exploring it by yourself. It’s best if you watch the video now, showing how to do the trick, but if you like written tips, than take a look at my additional comments below the video in this article.
Good luck hooper!
While performing the “SMEAR”pay attention on the position of your body. Stand up, nice & tall, grab your hoop in front of you, from the inner surface, thumbs pointing the ground & let’s go. Move the hoop to the side of your body, lifting one hand above your head & the other goes down. Continue as explained in the video, going to the back, to the other side. What would be my additional hints for you about this trick:
- Relax your arms, from the shoulder to the tip of your fingers, make them flexible & fluid. Don’t put tension in it. You want to let your arm bend at every possible point. The arm, elbow and the wrist work.
- Avoid bending your back, while moving to the back with your hoop. Instead go to the point above – use the possible mobility of your arms.
- When you begin to feel comfortable with the tricks, try to use your imagiation about it. Try to bend your legs, maybe even squat, while performing the trick. Take your feet off the ground, use the space you are in. Take steps, turn in circles, change positions. Let yourself go.
Smear is a beautiful movement by itself, but it will also become very useful in your hoop dance practice, as transition between vertical & horizontal movements.
